Yaa is an artist and researcher based between Newcastle Upon Tyne and London. Her work centers around sound and computational biology. She completed a PhD in computational biology in 2020 and subsequently spent time working in techbio. Both her scientific and artistic practice are rooted in ‘research’, AKA curiosity, AKA knowledge-making.
Recently, she has been developing a community-based practice, incorporating computational biology methods into her music making in an effort to create spaces to re-centre wonder, connection and appreciation of life. This was the genesis of the Tea Service event series, an evening of herbal tea plant DNA sonification and improvisation. In 2025, she was awarded DYCP funding from Arts Council England to undertake a residency in spatial audio at MONOM Berlin where she was able to build on this work.
She writes a substack on decolonial perspectives on biological knowledge in the age of AI- a primer on bio AI for the radical left.
